Is my PDF or password uploaded to a server?

No. The encryption and decryption run entirely in your browser using qpdf compiled to WebAssembly. Your PDF and the password never leave your device — you can verify by opening the Network tab or disconnecting from the internet after the page loads.

What encryption is used when I protect a PDF?

256-bit AES, the strongest standard PDF encryption. The protected file is a normal encrypted PDF that opens in any reader once the correct password is entered.

Can this remove a password I don't know?

No, and that is by design. Unlocking requires the correct password — it removes protection from a PDF you can already open, it does not crack or bypass unknown passwords. A wrong password simply fails.

Will the protected PDF work everywhere?

Yes. It uses standard PDF encryption, so Adobe Acrobat, browsers, phones and any compliant PDF reader will prompt for the password and open it normally.
